Hypothermia - When it strikes what do you do?
Your out enjoying that spring weather and all of a sudden you notice your
friend is acting different.
They are shivering and lagging behind. When asked ARE YOU ALRIGHT - they mumble
a hesitant affirmative, I am OK.
Now they are moving and or acting erratic and then they collapse. You are miles from no where, cell phones may not work and there are no medical or EMT members in the group. Your friend may be suffering from Hypothermia, the rapid chilling of your core body temperature.
First Stage -
You are shivering - have poor coordination - slurred speech - poor judgment.
Second Stage -
Body temperature dropped below 95 degrees - muscular rigidly replaces
shivering - they become more irrational - they need warmth immediately from an
external source - there heat loss must be stopped immediately. MOST IMPORTANT
THE VICTIM DOES NOT REALIZE WHAT IS HAPPENING.
If action is not taken immediately they may die.
What do you do to help your friend? -
1. Send someone for help -
2. Gently lay the victim down -
3. Are they breathing? CPR may be necessary -
4. Laying them down helps prevent shock and gets blood flow to the brain -
5. Put any insulation under and over them; clothing, blankets etc. -
6. Remove any wet clothing, keep in mind at this point the victim maybe
irrational and likely uncooperative -
7. If the victim is awake give them a warm beverage BUT NOT coffee, tea and NEVER
alcohol -
8. Use you body heat be sitting or laying Front to Back or Back to Back -
9. Cover the victims mouth and nose with a loose knit material such a wool.
10. Remember hypothermia may masquerade itself as death - Never stop apply
warmth / heat -
11. Hypothermia can be mistaken for intoxication as the body metabolizes fat it
gives off an alcoholic smell -
12.Victims can be so confused they will actually undress -
13. If you get the victim to a car ALWAYS TAKE THE VICTIM DIRECTLY TO A HOSPITAL there
life depends on it.
